
Volleyball Celebrates Senior Day vs. VCU

WASHINGTON – The George Washington volleyball team celebrated Senior Day prior to the final home match of the 2023 season. VCU topped GW on the day, winning the match in straight sets.
SENIOR DAY
Prior to the match, GW honored the senior members of the 2023 volleyball team. Liv Womble, Markella Lanara, Elizabeth Drelling and team manager Anna Rubin were celebrated for their contributions to the program and overall academic accomplishments.
BY THE NUMBERS
GW was paced by junior Salem Yohannes with 12 kills and a .263 hitting percentage. Junior Brittany Myers also got into double figures with 11 kills on the day. Womble added seven kills for GW, while Drelling chipped in six. Defensively, the Revolutionaries were paced by sophomore Amina Robinson with 16 digs. Sophomore Maeve Loughran added 10 digs while also dishing out 36 assists. Loughran finished with three of GW's five service aces as well. As a team, GW totaled 43 kills, 41 assists, 55 digs, seven blocks and five service aces.
VCU was led by Parker Hartzell and Kialah Jefferson with 12 kills each. Ana Brangioni notched 10 kills, while Jasmine Knight finished with eight. Taylor Aguano recorded 21 assists for the Rams, while AnnaBelle Tomei notched 17. Defensively, VCU was paced by Anja Kujundzic with 18 digs, while Brangioni added 12.

UP NEXT
GW will conclude the 2023 regular season next weekend at Saint Louis. The Revolutionaries battle the Bilikens on Friday at 7 p.m., and again on Saturday at 2 p.m. Both matches will be carried on ESPN+.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Set one was controlled by VCU early on. The Rams built an 11-4 lead in the early stages and didn't look back. Following the opening run, GW couldn't close the Rams' lead to less than four. VCU eventually claimed the opening set, 25-20.
- In set two, GW was the beneficiary of an early run. The Revolutionaries got out to an early 8-4 lead and eventually found themselves with a 19-14 lead late in the frame. Despite the advantage, VCU closed on a 12-5 spurt to win the set, 26-24, and take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.
- After back-and-forth play to open the third frame, the score was knotted at 18 apiece. GW used a quick 4-1 run to open a 22-19 lead late. Not backing down, VCU managed to score five of the next seven points to tie the score again at 24-24. Using clutch plays down the stretch, VCU pulled out a 28-26 win to secure the victory.
