Volleyball Drops Five Set Match vs. VCU

WASHINGTON – The George Washington volleyball team fell in A-10 action to VCU on Saturday evening. Despite GW holding a 2-1 lead, the Rams captured the final two sets of the match to win a five-set thriller.
BY THE NUMBERS
The Buff & Blue were led by junior Brittany Myers who recorded 16 kills. Myers also added four digs for GW. Graduate student Kelsey Watkins and senior Liv Womble both added 11 kills for the Revolutionaries. Watkins finished the match with four total blocks and three service aces, while Womble finished with three service aces as well. Junior Salem Yohannes notched nine kills and a team-high 21 digs for GW, while sophomore Amina Robinson added 20 digs. Sophomore Maeve Loughran poured in a game-high 45 assists for GW. As a team, the Buff & Blue recorded 58 kills, 51 assists, 77 digs, 10 service aces and 10 total blocks.
VCU was led by Kialah Jefferson who notched 16 kills and nine digs. Parker Hartzell and Jasmine Knight both tallied 15 kills, while Ana Brangioni finished with nine. Anja Kujundzic tallied a game-high 29 digs, while Tomei AnnaBelle dished out 24 assists.

The Revolutionaries will conclude their 2023 home slate tomorrow at 2 p.m. against VCU. The match also marks Senior Day for the Buff & Blue with festivities slated to begin roughly 15 minutes prior to first serve. The match will be carried live on ESPN+.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Despite trailing early, VCU secured a 1-0 lead in the match with a 25-23 win in set one. The Rams trailed by four on multiple occasions early in the set, but ultimately rallied to take the opening frame and grab the early momentum.
- VCU held a 13-7 lead midway through set two but GW wouldn't back down, using a 9-3 run to knot the score at 16 apiece. Continuing their hot play, GW closed the set on a 9-4 run to win the frame 25-20. In total, GW put together an 18-7 run to close out the Rams.
- Late in set three, GW once again found themselves trailing, this time by a score of 20-17. The Buff & Blue continued their clutch play, closing the set on an 8-1 run to grab a 2-1 lead in the match. The run was aided by three kills from first-year Haylee Brown.
- Set four and five were controlled by VCU. The largest lead GW managed to build was one, while VCU's advantage grew to seven on multiple occasions. GW made a late push in set five to tie the contest at 13, 14 and 15, but VCU secured the final two points of the match to seal the victory.
