NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - GW men's basketball redshirt freshman Garrett Johnson has been named the A-10 Rookie of the Week for the second time in as many weeks to begin his career, the league announced on Monday.
Johnson continued to take the league by storm in two wins over Hofstra and New Hampshire this week, averaging 16.5 ppg, 9.0 rpg, 1.0 bpg and 1.0 spg while shooting 50% from the floor, 42% from deep and 86% from the free throw line.
On Tuesday vs. Hofstra, Johnson poured in 15 points to go along with eight rebounds, a pair of steals and an assist in 32 minutes of action. He then followed up on Saturday with his first career double-double vs. New Hampshire with 18 points and 10 rebounds. He knocked down all four of his 3-point attempts in the first half vs. the Wildcats and also recorded a pair of blocks.
Through four games, Johnson has been GW's leading scorer at 17.3 ppg and rebounder at 8.3 rpg. He ranks third in the league in field goal percentage (59.0%) and 3-point percentage (50.0%), fourth in rebounding and fifth in free throw percentage (92.3%).
The Oakton, Va., native has started his career with four-straight games of at least 15 points, six rebounds and at least one 3-pointer made, one of just two players in the country to have done so in each of his team's first four games this year. He's also one of just two first-years nationally averaging at least 17.0 ppg and 8.0 rpg.
Johnson and the Revolutionaries will put their 4-0 record on the line this week at the Baha Mar Hoops Nassau Championship. The three-game tournament begins on Friday night when GW takes on Ohio at 7 p.m.
