Matic closed out a tremendous debut season in Buff and Blue last week at the NCAA Championship in Atlanta, highlighted by a shining swim in the 100-yard butterfly that equaled his Atlantic 10 record of 45.52 seconds and placed him tied for 22nd out of 42 competitors in a world-class field.
The fifth man to represent the program at the national meet and first since 2018, Matic closed strong in the 100 fly on Friday morning to take third in his heat and better his seed position by six spots. The redshirt sophomore from Belgrade, Serbia, also placed 49th in the 50 free (:19.79) on Thursday and 37th in the 200 fly (1:48.58) on Saturday.
After transferring from ECU, Matic found a home in Foggy Bottom this season and earned his place among the nation's best. He won seven gold medals at the conference meet to help the men's squad to its second straight conference title and fifth crown in six years in dominant fashion. Along the way, he set individual A-10 marks in the 100 fly, 200 fly (1:45.17) and 50 free (:19.56) and was part of program-record performances in the 200 medley relay (1:25.78), 400 medley relay (3:09.40) and 200 free relay (1:19.36).
