Colonials to play Salem in MAWPC third-place game
BRONX, N.Y. - No. 19 (t) GW water polo fell to Bucknell, 7-5, in the MAWPC Championship semifinals on Saturday night. The Colonials will move on to face Salem in the third-place game tomorrow at 1:30 p.m., and the game will be aired on Stretch Live.
Nick Schroeder broke into the scoring with an early goal, but Bucknell answered with a 4-0 run. Schroeder halted the Bisons' streak with his second goal early in the second quarter, and on the next GW possession, Theodoros Pateros brought the Colonials back within one.
Bucknell held GW scoreless for most of the third quarter, while adding two goals of its own. Andrija Sekulic broke through late in the third quarter, but the Colonials trailed by two entering the fourth.
Schroeder scored his third goal of the night at the 3:34 mark of the fourth to bring GW back within one, leaving GW searching for the game-tying goal. On its last possession, GW got the ball to Pateros, who fired a shot at the Bucknell net, but the shot was partially deflected by the Bucknell goalkeeper, and ultimately settled right in front of the goal line.
It's GW's first loss this season to an MAWPC opponent other than Fordham. The Colonials will try and put a bow on its strong run this season in tomorrow's third-place game.
