Colonials down Salem, 23-16, and end season on a high note
BRONX, N.Y. - No. 19 (t) GW water polo downed Salem, 23-16, in Sunday afternoon's MAWPC Championship third-place game. The Buff and Blue finish third in the MAWPC Championship for the second straight year, and continued its streak of finishing third or higher at every MAWPC Championship under head coach Barry King.
The Colonials got out to an early 2-1 lead with goals from both Theodoros Pateros and Nick Schroeder on the first two possessions. Salem found an equalizer later in the first quarter on the power play, and both teams cashed in once more to end the first quarter tied 3-3.
Early in the second quarter, GW got its first multi-goal lead of the game after Pateros powered home two goals in under a minute. Salem hung around, and after a back-and-forth second quarter, GW led 10-9 at the half.
The Buff and Blue set the tone at the start of the third quarter with a 4-1 run, but Salem finished the quarter on a 4-2 run of its own to cut the lead back down to two entering the fourth quarter.
Pateros scored his fifth and sixth goals of the game at the start of the fourth quarter, and GW began to pull away. The Colonials held a 7-2 advantage in fourth-quarter goals which put the game out of reach for Salem.
