Yohannes matches season-high with 16 kills
RICHMOND, Va. – GW volleyball fell in its first of two matches at VCU this weekend in a four-set back-and-forth match at Siegel Center, 22-25, 22-25, 25-21, 20-25.Â
BY THE NUMBERSÂ
Salem Yohannes led the GW offense, matching her season-high with 16 kills. The outsider hitter tallied just four errors to finish with a .300 hitting percentage. Brittany Myers and MC Daubendiek each put down 11 kills and Tierra Porter and Liv Womble added seven apiece.
GW's 55 kills were set up by Grace Allread, who registered 21 assists, and Dilara Elmacioglu, who added 11. Maeve Loughran also shared the setting duties, adding nine assists.
Defensively, Bella Bowman had 23 digs and Yohannes had 10. Addie Feek, Womble and Porter each made three stops at the net.
HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ
Set one featured 14 ties, with VCU managing a 3-0 scoring run at the 22nd point to take the one-set advantage. GW and VCU each put down 15 kills in the opening frame, with GW swinging for a match-high .250.
The two teams went back-and-forth again in set two, with seven ties and four lead changes. GW held the one-point advantage at 20-19, but VCU outscored its visitors 6-2 to earn the 2-0 set advantage.
GW topped VCU in set three, marking its first set victory over the Rams since 2018. Five ties came in the early stages of the set before GW moved to a 20-18 lead. Boosted by four kills and a VCU attack error, GW forced a fourth set.
GW trailed by as many as eight in set four, but the Buff & Blue clawed their way back into the set behind a 4-0 scoring run to force a VCU timeout at 13-9 with the Rams in front. VCU then went on a five-point scoring run to push its lead back to six, later clinching the set and the match at 25-20.
