The Buff & Blue sweep Saturday contests as historic run continues
George Washington water polo continued its winning ways on Saturday, extending its historic unbeaten streak to a program-best 15 games with victories over Mount St. Mary's and Bucknell.
In its first game on Saturday, GW overcame a halftime deficit to pull out a 16-14 victory over The Mount in Emmitsburg, Md. Then, after a two-hour drive to Lewisburg, Pa., GW finished off its Saturday sweep with a 12-11 win against the Bison.
GW 16, Mount St. Mary's 14
It was a tale of two halves, as GW found itself down 10-8 against The Mount following the opening half of action before storming back in the third quarter with a six-goal performance. Nick Schroeder led the assault in the third stanza with a hat trick and goalkeeper Luca Castorina made two big saves to help give GW a 14-12 lead going into the fourth quarter. In the final frame, Theodoros Pateros helped ice the victory with his fourth goal of the game.
GW 12, Bucknell 11
In GW's second contest of the day, it was the second quarter that proved to be the turning point for the Buff & Blue's 15th consecutive win. Following a 2-2 draw in the opening frame, George Washington received goals from Andrija Sekulic, Michael Wheeler and Antonin Kralj to pull ahead 5-4. Despite the offenses matching each other with seven goals in the second half, GW's defense stood tall and prevented a game-tying goal.
UP NEXT:
GW will look to extend its historic run when it travels to Fordham and Wagner for another doubleheader next Saturday, October 11.
