Buff & Blue won at Bucknell on Sunday
LEWISBURG, Pa. - Behind a tremendous defensive effort, GW men's water polo downed Bucknell, 8-5, on Sunday afternoon to complete a perfect opening weekend of Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference play at 3-0.
The Buff and Blue followed up conference wins over Johns Hopkins and Mount St. Mary's by taking down the Bison at Kinney Natatorium. They earned the final victory thanks to a game-high three goals from Andras Levai and a defense that held the home side scoreless over the game's final 10:23.
After Bucknell tied it at 5 with 2:23 to go in the third quarter, GW scored three goals over the next two minutes to create separation. Henry Maas broke the deadlock, and Antonin Kralj and Leo Lueddemann also contributed to the run.
That lead stayed intact the rest of the way with neither side scoring in the final quarter.
Luca Castorina was excellent in the GW net once again, tallying 10 saves and a career-high five steals. Eight other student-athletes recorded steals in the lock-down defensive performance with Levai, Maas and DJ Davis nabbing two apiece.
Levai led the way offensively with his hat trick and closed the weekend with 11 total scores over the three victories. Maas compiled a sterling all-around stat line vs. the Bison, finishing with a goal, two assists, two steals and an ejection drawn.
Now riding a four-game winning streak overall, GW heads to the West Coast next week to face Cal Baptist, La Verne and Loyola Marymount in non-conference action.
