Viktor Jovanovic scored game-winner with 48 seconds left
BALTIMORE - Viktor Jovanovic's go-ahead goal with 48 seconds left turned out to be the game-winner as GW men's water polo pulled out a 12-11 victory over Johns Hopkins on Friday night to begin Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference play.
The Buff and Blue never trailed in the contest but had to battle to the finish to pull out the road triumph at Newton White Aquatic Center.Â
After the Blue Jays knotted the game at 11 with back-to-back goals coming down the stretch, the visitors answered back with Jovanovic providing the final-minute offensive heroics before the defense came up with a pair of clutch stops to finish out the win.
Henry Maas led the way for GW with three goals to equal a career high, while Andras Levai and Antonin Kralj both chipped in two goals and three assists.
Jovanovic supplied two goals and a team-high three ejections drawn. It was the second consecutive game that the sophomore center scored the game-winning goal after providing the difference in a 12-11 overtime win vs. Brown last Saturday.
DJ Davis also contributed a pair of scores vs. Johns Hopkins.
Reigning MAWPC Defensive Player of the Week Luca Castorina turned in another excellent night between the pipes with 15 saves, in addition to a pair of steals and an assist.
UP NEXT: GW has a quick turnaround to host Mount St. Mary's in a noon start Saturday at Smith Center Pool. The Buff and Blue will finish the weekend with a Sunday road trip to Bucknell for a third MAWPC contest in as many days.
