Buff & Blue host Mount St. Mary's on Saturday at Smith Center Pool
After three rigorous weekends of non-conference play, GW men's water polo is set to begin its Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference slate with three games in as many days.
The Buff and Blue begin the run on Friday night with a showdown vs. Johns Hopkins in Baltimore at the Newton White Aquatic Center before welcoming Mount St. Mary's to Smith Center Pool on Saturday for a noon start. The busy weekend wraps up Sunday with a road trip to Bucknell for a 1 p.m. start at Kinney Natatorium.
LAST TIME OUT:Â GW earned a doubleheader split last Saturday at Harvard. After falling in the morning to the host Crimson, the Buff and Blue came back in the afternoon to defeat Brown in overtime, 12-11.
Viktor Jovanovic's go-ahead goal with 1:40 left in the second overtime period turned out to be the game-winner. The GW defense, anchored by goalkeeper Luca Castorina, was able to hold off the Bears from there.
Castorina was fantastic in net, racking up 15 saves in the victory. The sophomore keeper shared MAWPC Defensive Player of the Week honors for his efforts.
Nick Schroeder led a balanced Buff and Blue offensive attack that included eight different scorers.
THE MAN IN THE MIDDLE: Building off his All-Conference rookie campaign, Jovanovic has put together a strong start to the season at the center position.
Jovanovic has boosted the offense with 19 ejections drawn through eight games. The sophomore from Calgary, Canada, has earned the Buff and Blue at least one power play in every game and at least two six times.
After his game-winner vs. Brown, Jovanovic ranks fourth on the squad with seven goals. He's been a consistent contributor, finding the net in six of the eight contests.
SCOUTING THE COMPETITION:Â Johns Hopkins (1-5) is led by Emerson Sullivan, who has scored 19 of the team's 48 goals through six games.
This will be GW's first-ever meeting with Mount St. Mary's in that program's second year of competition. The Mountaineers are 4-7 on the season following a 2-2 weekend at the Bucknell Invitational with the wins coming against Mercyhurst and Salem.
Winners of the past two MAWPC titles, Bucknell (5-7) dropped out of the CWPA national poll after falling to Fordham and Wagner in its home pool last weekend to begin conference play.
UP NEXT:Â GW heads to the West Coast next week for games against Cal Baptist, La Verne and Loyola Marymount. The Buff and Blue return to MAWPC action on Oct. 9 with a split doubleheader at Fordham and Wagner.
