36 Student-Athletes Named Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars; 2020 Athletics Dean’s List unveiled
Diverse: Issues In Higher Education has announced the 2021 Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports Scholar Awards that honor undergraduate students who have excelled in the classroom as well as on the athletic field. Named for sports icon Arthur Ashe, Jr., the Ashe honors recognize outstanding minority students who have distinguished themselves in their academic and athletic pursuits. To be considered, student-athletes must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher, be at least a sophomore at their respective institution and have demonstrated a commitment to community service and student leadership.

The magazine has dedicated an edition every year since 1992 to honor student-athletes for their commitment to excellence and who reflect the values of Arthur Ashe, Jr. Among GW's 36 honorees, four were selected in their individual sport category with special recognition: Olivia Cantrell (Women's Rowing), Emils Pone (Men's Swimming & Diving), Gabrielle Simonti (Men's Water Polo) and Abbas Saeed (Men's Squash).

Past Ashe scholars include Baylor's Robert Griffin III (2011), Tennessee's Kara Lawson (2003) and San Diego State's Marshall Faulk (1993).

Also on Thursday, GW unveiled its 2020 Athletics Dean's List, with a record of 102 instances in which a student-athlete achieved a 4.0 in either the spring (55) or fall (47) of last year. In the most recent semester, the department's GPA was 3.50 with all 27 programs earning above a 3.0 as a whole. In total, 268 student-athletes earned north of a 3.5 GPA in the fall with the Gymnastics program setting the pace with a 3.78 team GPA.
