GW earns first win behind stirring comeback
WASHINGTON - Having dropped the first two sets and trailing late in the third, GW volleyball dug deep for a tremendous come-from-behind victory on Tuesday night, defeating defending MEAC champion Howard in five sets (19-25, 20-25, 28-26, 25-15, 15-11) in the Smith Center.
GW trailed for the majority of the third set, but rallied to even things at 22-22. Neither team gained separation thereafter until the Buff & Blue broke a 26-26 thanks to consecutive Bison attack errors to earn the set win.
GW rode the momentum from the third set comeback to a dominant fourth set, rolling to a 25-15 victory. The catalyst in the set was the Buff & Blue's serve, which racked up six aces from five different student-athletes, including back-to-back aces from senior Sydney Welch to force the tiebreaker.
GW broke out to an 8-3 advantage in the fifth set, only to see Howard even things up at nine. From there, it was GDUB's block that sealed the deal as junior Paz Dozie-Nnamah and first-year Markella Lanara recorded back-to-back rejections to break an 11-11 stalemate. An ace from Welch and a Howard attack error completed the comeback for GW.
Graduate student Ashley Waggle posted her second straight double-double with a team-leading 15 kills and 12 digs, hitting .231 in the process. Dozie-Nnamah ended up with 11 kills, six digs, three aces and two blocks.
Junior Heather Merryman dished out 33 assists, posted nine digs and also registered a team-high five service aces, part of a GW season-high 15. Lanara ended up with four block assists, including the critical two late in the deciding set.
The Buff & Blue will look to continue their momentum on Sunday, welcoming VCU for a non-conference match at 6 p.m.
