Dozie-Nnamah, Merryman record double-doubles in marathon
WASHINGTON - For the second time in as many home matches, GW volleyball went the maximum five sets, but Friday night against La Salle saw the tiebreaker go the visitor's way (25-22, 23-25, 26-24, 22-25, 15-17).
Junior libero Bella Bowman led a sterling defensive effort for the Buff & Blue with 36 digs, matching her career high and crossing the 1,000-dig threshold for her career in the process.
As a team, GW had 112 digs on the night with graduate student Ashley Waggle (23), junior Heather Merryman (13), junior Paz Dozie-Nnamah (13), senior Sydney Welch (11) and first-year Markella Lanara (11) all joining Bowman in double digits.
Dozie-Nnamah racked up a career-high 19 kills for the second double-double of her career while Merryman dished out 47 assists for her second double-double of the year.
The incredibly even match saw GW out-hit La Salle .198-.160, and hold edges in digs (112-86) and blocks (10-5). However, the Explorers posted 10 more kills (67-57) and had 11 aces to GW's six.
The five-set affair featured 37 ties and 11 lead changes in total. GW appeared to have seized momentum by scoring the final seven points of the third set to rally for a 26-24 victory, taking a 2-1 lead.
However, La Salle battled back to earn the win in the fourth set and held a 14-11 lead in the tiebreaker. The Buff & Blue battled back yet again with three straight points and ultimately fended off four match points before back-to-back attack errors sealed their fate.
The same two teams are scheduled to meet again on Saturday with first serve scheduled for 6 p.m.
