Volleyball Drops Five-Set Heartbreaker at Mason

Waggle notches first 20-kill day in Buff & Blue
FAIRFAX, Va. - GW volleyball came within a point of a thrilling five-set comeback on Sunday afternoon at George Mason, but the host Patriots finished the match with three straight points to eke out the win (20-25, 25-22, 20-25, 25-20, 14-16).
The Buff & Blue moved ahead in the final set, 14-13, off consecutive kills from first-year Elizabeth Drelling, prompting a George Mason timeout. The Patriots responded with a kill and a block to move ahead, ultimately claiming the match on a block error.
GW enjoyed its best blocking day of the year, posting 15.0 rejections, including eight from senior Callie Fauntleroy and six from graduate student Ashley Waggle. The TCU transfer recorded her first 20-kill day in Buff & Blue, swinging .319 in 47 swings.
Junior setter Heather Merryman registered a double-double with 42 assists and 15 digs. Classmate Bella Bowman led the defensive effort with 24 digs.
Mason broke open the first set with a 6-0 run to take a 15-10 lead, creating enough separation to earn a 25-20 victory.
GW flipped the script in the second set with a 6-0 run of its own, turning an 11-9 deficit into a 15-11 advantage. Waggle recorded two of her three aces during the spurt, pushing GW ahead for good to even the match.
After Mason swiped the third set, GW turned things around in the fourth thanks to a 15-5 burst that saw the Buff & Blue move ahead 20-15. Junior Paz Dozie-Nnamah forced the fifth and decisive set with a kill.
The two teams were tied 10 times in the tiebreaker and saw a pair of lead changes, the last of which swung the match to the Patriots.
GW now turns its attention to its home opener on Tuesday, welcoming Howard to the Smith Center at 6 p.m.
