Volleyball Drops A-10 Opener at George Mason

Same two teams meet Sunday at 1 p.m.
FAIRFAX, Va. - GW volleyball fell in its A-10 opener on Saturday afternoon at George Mason, dropping the match in straight sets (23-25, 20-25, 17-25).Â
Mason outhit the Buff & Blue .326-.173, taking advantage of 21 attack errors while posting three more kills (43-40). First-years Liv Womble and Elizabeth Drelling and senior Callie Fauntleroy led GW with eight kills a piece.
The opening set was back-and-forth, with eight ties and five lead changes. Drelling had seven kills in the set, including one to put GW ahead, 23-22. The Patriots rallied with three straight points to win the set.
Mason used the momentum to burst out to a 7-2 lead in the second set and never surrendered the lead to take a two-set advantage.
GW used Womble primarily in the third set with the first-year picking up four kills in 11 swings. The Buff & Blue jumped out to a 6-1 lead before seeing the Patriots respond with nine of the next 12 points to assume a 10-9 lead. Leading 16-14, Mason scored seven straight to create separation and put the match away.
The same two teams are set to square off on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
