Fauntleroy leads with five kills and four blocks
KINGSTON, R.I. - GW volleyball fell in three sets on Saturday afternoon at Rhode Island, falling 20-25, 16-25, 15-25 inside Keaney Gymnasium.
The Buff & Blue were led by senior Callie Fauntleroy, who swung .444 in nine attempts with five kills, adding four blocks. Junior setter Heather Merryman dished out 18 assists with seven digs and two blocks.
GW was doubled up in kills (48-24) by the Rams, who outhit the visitors .343-.138. URI also had advantages in assists (45-20) and digs (44-30).
GW had its best attacking set in the opening frame, hitting .290 with 11 kills. However, Rhode Island was an even more efficient .333 with 18 kills. URI broke open a back-and-forth set with a 7-2 run to take a decisive 23-18 lead before holding on for the lead.
The Rams then pulled away late in the second set via a period-ending 6-1 run and capped off the match with a decisive third set win, finishing on a 17-6 burst.
The Buff & Blue will take the next week off from competition before returning to the Smith Center next Saturday, March 6 at 1 p.m. against Fordham.
