Caroline McCombs takes home victory in first game as Buff & Blue Head Coach
WASHINGTON - The Caroline McCombs era officially started off with a win, as GW women's basketball outscored American by 14 in the second half en route to a 58-47 opening-night victory.
The Colonials' victory was fueled by a dominant performance from graduate student, and D.C. native, Ty Moore, who registered her fifth career double-double Tuesday evening and closed out the win with eight points in the final frame. Moore's 18 points helped lead GW's bench, which outscored the Eagles' reserves 31-8.
After a lackluster start, the Colonials clawed back to get within 23-20 at halftime, and just as Coach McCombs had preached all offseason, defense helped swing the contest in GW's favor. The Colonials held the Eagles to just 31% from the field in the second half, while registering five steals, 12 points off turnovers and eight second-chance points.
In total, George Washington forced 24 turnovers on the night and outscored American 26-8 in points off turnovers and 12-2 in second-chance points.
Other key contributors Tuesday included Mayowa Taiwo, who chipped in with 10 points and seven boards, and Essence Brown, who led the team with three assists and helped hold Patriot League Preseason Player of the Year Jade Edwards to just 14 points.
Up next for George Washington is a Thursday night matchup with #24 Virginia Tech. The Colonials and Hokies will tip off at 7 p.m. on NBC Sports Washington and ESPN+.
