Frames and Blethen pace Colonial attack with 10 points each
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - George Washington's defense once again proved it is a force to be reckoned with, smothering the UT Martin Skyhawks' attack on Friday afternoon en route to a 46-37 victory in the first game of the San Juan Shootout.
The Colonials started off the game scorching hot on offense, scoring 21 of their 46 points in the first quarter. Faith Blethen proved to be too much for the Skyhawks in the first frame with seven points, while Sheslanie Laureano, playing in front of her hometown fans, buried two threes.
Despite the Colonials' offense coming back down to earth as the game went on, GW's defense never stopped, holding UT Martin to just 28 percent from the field, and 20 percent from deep. Additionally, the Colonials continued to show an aptitude for shutting down star players, holding UT Martin's leading scorers Paige Pipkin and Holly Forbes to just a combined 12 points and four field goals.
Offensively for GW, Kyara Frames and Faith Blethen led the team in scoring with 10 points apiece. GW also received a strong game from Ty Moore, who scored six alongside her 14 rebounds.
Also noteworthy for George Washington, transfer Nya Lok played her first minutes of the season, racking up four points and four boards during her 12 minutes on the court.
The Buff & Blue will now rest up in the Puerto Rico sun before returning to action tomorrow night against Florida. Tip-off against the Gators will be at 7:00 p.m. EST.
