Men's Water Polo Takes Third at MAWPC Championship

Buff & Blue beat Wagner in season finale
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - GW men's water polo scored an 11-9 win over Wagner in its season finale on Sunday afternoon to secure third place at the Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference Championship.
The contest was tied with five minutes to go before the Buff and Blue got goals from Bender Russo and Andras Levai and shook off the Seahawks.
Andrija Sekulic led the way with a season-high four goals, and Henry Maas put together a stat-stuffing performance with two goals and three assists, plus a steal, a field block and an ejection drawn.
After the tournament, Viktor Jovanovic and Luca Castorina were named to the All-MAWPC Championship First Team in recognition of their excellence during the three-day tournament.
Facing Wagner, GW bounced back strong from its Saturday semifinal loss to Navy to earn a victory and finish the weekend 2-1.Â
The Buff and Blue trailed early before running off four straight goals, including a pair from Maas, to end the opening period. They went to the halftime break with a 7-3 lead after scoring three consecutive goals to finish the second.
Wagner battled back to even the game at 8 early in the fourth quarter, and it was tied at 9 when Russo's goal gave the Buff and Blue the lead for good with 4:58 remaining. Levai padded the advantage with his second goal of the game with 2:18 to go, and the defense held strong over the final minutes to clinch the victory.
Sekulic capped a terrific weekend that saw him lead the squad with eight goals across the three games to finish his rookie season with 38 scores to rank third on the squad.
A day after being named to the All-MAWPC Second Team, Levai chipped in a pair of goals vs. Wagner to close his decorated career. The graduate student from Budapest, Hungary scored a team-high 45 goals this fall, and he finished tied for third with former teammate Andrew Mavis on the program's all-time scoring list with 279 total goals.
Viktor Jovanovic drew six ejections in the finale and became the program's all-time single season leader in that category in the process with 79 ejections drawn in 26 games.
Luca Castorina tallied 18 saves in the victory to finish his sophomore campaign with 349 stops, a total that ranks second in program history for a single season. The All-Conference Second Team pick was excellent between the pipes all fall while compiling a .541 save percentage.
