Pair honored after sweep to close regular season
BRIDGEPORT, Pa. - George Washington's Nick Schroeder and Luca Castorina have garnered Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference weekly awards for their play in a Saturday sweep to close the regular season.
Nick Schroeder was named Player of the Week after notching a team-high seven goals across wins over Johns Hopkins and No. 19 Navy, while Castorina picked up his third Defensive Player of the Week award of the fall after totaling 19 saves against 16 goals allowed for the day.
Schroeder picked up his first career MAWPC weekly award after tallying four goals, an assist and two steals in the 11-6 home win over Johns Hopkins and three goals and two steals in an 11-10 triumph at Navy that clinched the No. 3 spot in the conference standings for the Buff and Blue.
The senior from Orinda, Calif., is now tied for the team lead with 40 goals this season, and his 57 points are already a career high.
Castorina had another excellent weekend between the pipes, boosting his save percentage to .528 for the season. The sophomore goalkeeper made nine saves in the opener before recording 10 stops, two assists and a steal vs. the Midshipmen.
For the season, Castorina is averaging 13.1 saves per game, and his 302 total stops already ranks tied for third on the program's all-time single-season list. He was previously honored by the conference with back-to-back Defensive Player of the Week awards on Sept. 21 and 28.
In addition, first-year Leo Lueddemann earned a spot on the league's Rookie of the Week Honor Roll after equaling a career high with three scores in the win at Navy.
GW (10-13, 7-5 MAWPC) will vie for a conference title this weekend at Navy's Lejeune Hall. The Buff and Blue open the three-day tournament on Friday with a 7:30 p.m. start vs. sixth-seeded Johns Hopkins.
