Buff & Blue host Patriots in Pink Game
Looking to improve its positioning in the Atlantic 10 standings, GW men's soccer is back in action on the Mount Vernon Campus on Wednesday, hosting George Mason in a 1 p.m. kickoff.
It's the program's Pink Game in support of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Please consider supporting the Virginia Hospital Center's Reinsch Pierce Family Center for Breast Health by visiting this page and selecting the center from the drop-down menu.
For those planning to attend Wednesday's contest, please note that the university has revised and updated its visitor policy, adding new requirements for our guests to campus. Visitors need to attest that they are vaccinated, or if they are unvaccinated, attest that they have received a negative COVID-19 test within 72 hours of their visit to campus, by registering here. Thank you for helping to keep GW safe.
LAST TIME OUT: GW has had a break from competition since a 3-0 setback at Wake Forest last Tuesday in its non-conference finale.
STANDINGS CHECK: With three matches remaining in the regular season, GW (1-3-1, four points) sits in 11th place but just three points back of a three-way tie for the No. 6 spot in the A-10 standings. The top eight clubs will earn spots in the upcoming conference championship.
DIGGING IN DEFENSIVELY: In its most recent A-10 match, GW picked up a point on the road by dueling UMass to a scoreless draw on Oct. 9. Justin Grady made all five of his saves after halftime in his second clean sheet of the season and the 10th of his career.
GW has limited its opponent to one goal or fewer in nine of 14 games this season and its 1.397 goals against average ranks fifth in the conference.
SCOUTING THE PATRIOTS: George Mason is at the bottom of the A-10 table at 0-5 and 2-10-1 overall. On Saturday, the Patriots were downed by VCU in overtime, 1-0, on a 97th-minute penalty kick.
Louis Lehr (four goals) and Balin Kocso (three goals) have combined for seven of the team's nine scores this season.
GW and George Mason engaged in a pair of defensive battles during the spring season. The teams played to a scoreless draw on March 17 in Fairfax, Va., before the Buff and Blue claimed a 1-0 home victory on April 3 with Sandro Weber providing the game's lone goal in the 35th minute.
UP NEXT: GW hosts A-10 leader Saint Louis on Saturday for Senior Day at The Vern. The Buff and Blue will recognize five graduate students and two seniors before the 1 p.m. kickoff.
