Yohannes registers 18 kills in the victory
WASHINGTON – After dropping set one to open up the match, GW volleyball won three straight to earn a conference victory on Saturday, topping the Patriots in four sets, 18-25, 25-18, 25-22, 28-26.
Salem Yohannes and Liv Womble led the GW offense for the second straight match with 18 and 10 kills, respectively. GW hit for a season-best .270 with 51 total kills.
Powered by 17 kills, the visitors stole set one. After trading points at the beginning of the set, George Mason established its lead at 16-7, a deficit that would prove to be too much to overcome for GW.
Despite Mason taking a 7-4 lead in the opening stages of set two, a seven-point scoring run by GW helped give the home team a lead they would not surrender. GW went on two more scoring runs of three and four points to help even the match at 1-1.
GW took advantage of five consecutive errors by George Mason to open set three and would hold onto its lead the rest of the way. Despite a late four-point surge by Mason, three kills from Yohannes helped GW maintain its lead at 21-18. Thanks to a kill from Sarah Pintel and three Mason errors, GW would be one set away from its first victory on home court.
In the final set, Mason jumped ahead to a 4-0 advantage, but GW came back to knot the set at four. Three more ties occurred before GW pulled away at 20-16. The Patriots then cut into the home team's lead at 23-21 and survived three match points to even the set at 24. Mason's back-to-back points forced GW to withstand a set point, but a kill and a Patriot attack error put the match away.
