Buff & Blue wrapped non-conference slate Tuesday
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - GW men's soccer closed its non-conference slate on Tuesday night with a 3-0 loss to Wake Forest at Spry Soccer Stadium.
The Demon Deacons went in front in the ninth minute and then maintained that advantage until adding a pair of insurance tallies over the final 11 minutes.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- 9th Minute: Justin Grady stopped Kyle Holcomb's initial shot, but the rebound deflected to Hosei Kijima for a volley into the open net to give the Demon Deacons an early lead. (Wake Forest 1, GW 0)
- 80th Minute: Wake Forest added on thanks to an own goal. Kijima slammed a cross that deflected off a defender and into the net. (Wake Forest 2, GW 0)
- 84th Minute: On the Demon Deacons' final score, Tareq Shihab collected a shot off the post and sent a pass across the goal mouth to Roald Mitchell for the finish. (Wake Forest 3, GW 0)
NOTEWORTHY
- GW was outshot by Wake Forest, 20-5, in the contest.
- Grady made three saves in the opening half before giving way to Duncan Wegner, who played the final 45 minutes in his season debut.
- The Buff and Blue nearly equalized in the 27th minute, but Joshua Yurasits' free-kick blast just slid wide of the left post. The veteran defender tallied another shot on a free kick in the 84th minute.
- Liam Emson had GW's lone shot on goal in the 87th minute.
- Twenty-four different student-athletes saw action for the Buff and Blue.
UP NEXT: GW has an eight-day break from competition before continuing its A-10 slate next Wednesday, Oct. 20, with a home date vs. Revolutionary Rival George Mason.
