Redshirt freshman was second-leading rebounder in conference
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - GW women's basketball redshirt freshman Mayowa Taiwo capped off her initial campaign in the Buff & Blue by being named to the A-10 All-Rookie Team on Thursday.
Taiwo is the Colonials' first All-Rookie Team selection since Mei-Lyn Bautista in 2016. She joins a special collection of student-athletes to earn the distinction at GW, including four future A-10 Players of the Year.
After sitting out last season due to a knee injury, Taiwo made up for lost time with a dynamic year, averaging 6.8 ppg and 6.1 rpg while shooting 48.3% in 30 games. She was one of just four players to appear in every game for GW, starting 23, third-most on the team.
Her 6.1 rebounds were the second-most for a first-year in the league, while her 2.3 offensive boards per contests tied for sixth overall.
The Hanover, Md., product elevated her game against league foes, averaging 8.3 ppg and 6.2 rpg while shooting 52.3%, good for second in the A-10. She also grabbed the fourth-most offensive rebounds in league play, leading all freshmen.
Taiwo finished the season on a high note, reaching double figures in five of her final seven games, including her second double-double of the year with 10 points and 11 rebounds vs. La Salle on Feb. 12.
Taiwo is part of a young, exciting first-year foursome that started the final six games of the season together for the Colonials. Looking forward to 2020-21, GW could return up to 75% of its scoring, 79% of its rebounding and 79% of its minutes played from a team that had a four-win improvement from 2018-19.
