Scholarship fund honoring late mentor to support men's and women's basketball
In February 2019, the GW community mourned the sudden loss of Leroy Charles, former Vice President for External Affairs of the George Washington University Medical Center.
In Foggy Bottom, Charles is remembered as a beloved colleague and mentor to GW basketball student-athletes spanning more than three decades.
The New York native became a faithful supporter of the Buff and Blue, following his own decorated career on the hardwood. He was voted team MVP as a high school senior at Monsignor McClancy Memorial High School, before receiving a full scholarship to Tufts University where he became the seventh-leading scorer in that school's history.
In recognition of Charles' impact at GW, his family, friends and the campus community have come together to ensure his legacy will never be forgotten through the creation of the Leroy Charles Memorial Scholarship.
The lead donors on the project, John 'Skip' Williams (SMHS MD '79) and Curtis Symonds are proud of their friend's wide-ranging achievements, especially his mentorship of youth.
Williams and Symonds hope the scholarship in Charles' name will make a positive impact on GW men's and women's basketball for generations to come: "It is our dearest wish that the scholarship be awarded to someone who most closely resembles the skills and talents of our beloved friend Leroy, someone who has leadership, humility, dedication, commitment, work ethic and character. This scholarship is a wonderful way to commemorate his legacy!"
