Colonials came together this fall to promote civic engagement
As Americans everywhere cast their ballots Tuesday, GW Athletics pauses activities to allow student-athletes, coaches and staff to make their voices heard at the polls.
Election Day concludes three-plus months of conversation, education and collaboration designed to encourage voter registration and informed participation across the department through the #OnlyatGW Voting Initiative. The virtual events this fall brought the spirit of the World's Most Powerful City to members of the Buff and Blue, whether in Foggy Bottom or spread out across the nation.
In the end, more than 95 percent of the eligible student-athlete population registered to vote, including 100 percent registration from 13 different programs.
"I'm so proud of our student-athletes, coaches and staff who made it a priority to get registered, become informed both locally and nationally and vote," said Director of Athletics Tanya Vogel. "I have been so inspired as our student-athletes took the lead on this initiative and used their voices to share concerns, passions and ideas that developed into programming for everyone in the department. This initiative is just the start, and voter education has now been permanently added to our annual programming."
Sparked by women's basketball junior Maddie Loder and developed by a team of student-athletes, coaches and staff, the #OnlyatGW Voting Initiative presented resources and opportunities for education and civic engagement to help student-athletes explore the democratic process.
The programming was highlighted by a speaker series featuring Emmy-winning political journalist Frank Sesno of the GW School of Media and Public Affairs and Kaitlin Denney, a sailing alumna who serves as special assistant to Kamala Harris in the Senate.
The education piece also included a string of team conversations focused on ballot education and understanding the issues on a local level, in addition to a social media series of videos and graphics spearheaded by GW SAAC to promote civic engagement.
Two weeks ago, student-athletes from four programs took part in an Hour of Action organized by women's basketball, combining to write more than 1,000 letters to send to elected officials and prospective voters from under-represented demographics.
In a fall unlike any other, it's been meaningful for the department to come together, regardless of political background or voting history. Today, all that's left to do is to vote. GW Athletics hopes that everyone will do the same. Vote.
