Community Engagement
GW Athletics Community Engagement Policy
GW Athletics encourages our student-athletes to create a positive impact within the local community and surrounding neighborhoods through outreach and engagement. With a purpose-driven focus, student-athletes are able to interact directly with campus neighbors and partners, providing the opportunity to build relationships and be a part of something bigger than themselves.Community engagement is a vital part of the student-athlete experience here at GW. In addition to student-athletes, coaches and staff are also provided the opportunity to participate in various community engagement and outreach initiatives, fostering a social responsibility and a deeper connection with the local community while making a positive impact through collective efforts.
GW Athletics Core Charitable Initiatives
- Supporting Local Youth:
- Through partnerships and programs such as the GW Nashman Center, Grassroots Health, Team Impact, Athletes for Hope (AFH), DC Public Schools, Read Across America, ,and the Nationals Youth Baseball Academy. GW athletics provides consistent support to the education and mentorship of DC youth by teaching the importance of reading, literacy, health education, and community.
- Fighting Hunger:
- By engaging with food banks, pantries, shelters, and other local partners, GW Athletics fights hunger by emphasizing the importance of ensuring everyone has access to nutritious food, while fostering a healthier community where individuals can thrive.
- Donation Drives:
- Through the collection of donations, GW athletics gathers essential resources to support DMV community members facing hardships, providing them with items such as clothes, shoes and blankets, used athletic equipment, and canned goods to help meet their basic needs and bring comfort during difficult times.
- Mental Health:
- GW Athletics champions mental wellness by partnering with campus and community organizations, such as Morgan’s Message, The Hidden Opponent, and One Love to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and promote access to mental health resources. Through various events, workshops, education, outreach, and open dialogue–we foster a supportive environment where individuals feel empowered to prioritize their mental well-being and support others in doing the same.
