Colonials welcome Hayden, Ojo and Patel
WASHINGTON - GW women's basketball announced the program's signing class for the 2021-22 season on Wednesday, welcoming three new student-athletes to the Buff & Blue. The three-member recruiting class includes guard Leila Patel and forwards Sophie Haydon and Michelle Ojo.
Sophie Haydon
6'3" // F // Shorewood, Minn. /// Minnetonka
Haydon will join fellow North Star State native Maddie Loder on the GW roster. Her junior season wrapped up in the section finals after averaging 11.3 ppg and 8.9 rpg for Minnetonka High School. Haydon has served as a captain on her team each of the last two years while achieving All-Conference status each year. She has already accrued four varsity letters entering her senior season and competed on the Nike EYBL circuit with North Tartan.
Michelle Ojo
6' // F // Virginia Beach, Va. // Princess Anne
After moving to Virginia Beach from North Carolina, Ojo has continued her high school career at one of the most successful women's basketball programs in the state in Princess Anne. Ojo returned from a broken foot in March to help push the Cavaliers to their 12th consecutive state championship appearance before the COVID-19 pandemic ended the season early. Originally from London, England, Ojo has twice been named to the All-District team and is rated as a three-star recruit and the #14 wing in the country per ESPN HoopGurlz. She finished her club career with Boo Williams of Nike EYBL.
Leila Patel
5'10" // G // Frisco, Texas // Frisco Centennial
Patel fits the mold of GW's recent wings, providing height and versatility at the position. She burst onto the scene for Frisco Centennial High School, earning District Newcomer of the Year honors in 2018 and team offensive MVP honors. She followed that up with All-State and All-District designations as a sophomore before surpassing the 1,000-point threshold this past year. Patel was named the offensive MVP of her team for the second time in three years en route to her second straight All-State and All-District honors. She played for Texas U on the Under Armour GUAA circuit.
