Colonials visit Mountaineers in final dual meet
Starting at 11 a.m., the Colonials will compete for the final time before the upcoming Atlantic 10 Championships vs. the Mountaineers at the Aquatic Center at Mylan Park.
LAST TIME OUT:Â GW gained useful experience last Saturday at William & Mary, battling the Tribe throughout a high-energy afternoon of racing in Williamsburg, Va.
DH Hwang claimed a win for GW in the 200 fly (1:52.54) on the men's side, and Zach Hu was named A-10 Rookie of the Week after leading the Colonials in both distance races.
Jackie Torrez's time of 2:02.16 in the 200 fly made her a winner by more than five seconds, while Andrea Ho (200 back, 2:03.29) and Courtney Sicinski (200 IM, 2:08.18) also claimed individual wins for the women vs. the Tribe.
BACK FOR MORE: The 2019 A-10 Championship's Most Outstanding Performer, Moritz Fath is well-positioned for more success as the Colonials seek a fourth straight conference title.
The senior from Germany owns the top times in the A-10 in both the 200 free (1:38.51) and 500 free (4:31.95). He's also second behind his teammate Hwang in the 1,650 free (15:48.94) and fourth in the 400 IM (4:01.69).
Entering his final trip to the A-10 Championship, Fath owns 13 conference medals with 10 of them gold. He's well-represented in GW's all-time record book, as well, with four individual program marks and three relay records.
RISING ROOKIE: In a short time, Stine Omdahl Petersen has established herself as one of the top breaststrokers in program history.
The first-year from Norway took down a six-year-old program record in the 100 breast with a time of 1:02.97 back in November at the Queens University Fall Frenzy.Â
At the same meet, Petersen teamed with Ho, Meghan Burton and Gemma Atherley on a program-record swim in the 400 medley relay (3:43.49). She also posted her season-best swim in the 200 breast (2:18.97) that weekend to rank third on the program's all-time top 10.
Omdahl Petersen will head into her first trip to the A-10 Championships looking to help the Colonials build on last season's runner-up finish. At the moment, her season-best efforts in the 100 breast and 200 breast rank third and sixth among conference swimmers, respectively.
CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD:Â Peter Nachtwey clinched a third straight trip to the NCAA Zone Diving Championships with his efforts vs. Georgetown on Jan. 18.
The junior from Ohio hit NCAA qualifying standards on both boards, first posting a season-high score of 308.20 on 1-meter and later adding a season-best 328.40 on 3-meter. He was awarded A-10 Performer of the Week honors in recognition of that performance.
Later this month, Nachtwey will have a chance to add to his success at the A-10 Championships. He was named Most Outstanding Diver at the 2019 A-10 Championships after claiming gold (3M) and silver (1M). He won silver on both boards as a rookie in 2018.
SCOUTING WEST VIRGINIA: The Mountaineers finished second on the men's side at the Big 12 Championships a year ago. They are 4-1 in head-to-head competition with wins over Pitt, SMU and Villanova, led by NCAA qualifier David Dixon.
The women were third in their conference last season. They hold a 2-3 mark in dual meets this season, paced by senior Morgan Bullock, who advanced to the 2019 NCAA Championship.
COMING UP:Â GW has a little more than two weeks to prepare for the A-10 Championships, which run Feb. 19-22 at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
