Colonials face stern test Saturday vs. Tribe
LAST TIME OUT:Â GW earned a Senior Day sweep vs. Georgetown last Saturday at Smith Center Pool.
Peter Nachtwey was named A-10 Performer of the Week after sweeping both diving events vs. the Hoyas. The junior from Ohio hit NCAA qualifying standards on both boards, first notching a season-high score of 308.20 on 1-meter and then closing out the meet with a season-best 328.40 on 3-meter.
DH Hwang (500 free, 1,000 free) and Haoning Chen (200 free, 100 breast) also won two individual events apiece for the Colonial men in a 153-90 victory.
The women showcased their depth with eight swimmers claiming individual victories in a 155-88 triumph, including seniors Gemma Atherley (200 free) and Jackie Torrez (200 IM)Â in their final home meet. The Buff and Blue also dominated the relays by taking the top two spots in both the 200 medley and 400 free relays.
WARM WELCOME:Â A graduate transfer from Lindenwood University in Missouri, Chen shined in his GW debut, highlighted by his pair of individual victories.Â
Competing for the first time since the 2019 D-II National Championships, Chen grabbed first in the 200 free in 1:43.34, edging teammate Youssef Ragab by a tenth of a second. Later, the native of China won the 100 breast in 56.71 seconds before punctuating his victory with a triumphant splash. He also placed seventh in the 50 free (:22.99).
SPRINT FOR IT: The women put their sprinting strength on full display vs. Georgetown. They took the top four spots in the 50 free with first-year Becca Brown touching first in 24.19 seconds followed by sophomore Grace Olivardia, sophomore Rebecca Smolcic and senior Sydney Melnick. Olivardia finished on top in the 100 free in 53.07 seconds with Brown second and Melnick fourth.
GW has added three new entries this season in its all-time top 10 in the 100 free and tallied two new marks in the 50 free.
SCOUTING WILLIAM & MARY:Â The Tribe faced another A-10 foe last weekend, earning a home sweep of Davidson.
The W&MÂ men have won five straight CAA titles and sit at 7-1 in head-to-head competition on the season, while the women hold a 5-4 record after back-to-back wins earlier this month.
COMING UP:Â GW finishes out the regular season on Saturday, Feb. 1 at West Virginia. The Colonials then have off until the A-10 Championships, which run Feb. 19-22 at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
