Colonials fell to the Pilots on Friday night
PORTLAND, Ore. – Making a rare appearance on the West Coast, GW men's soccer fell to Portland, 3-0, on Friday night at Merlo Field.
The Pilots netted a pair of first-half goals and then added another score in the closing minutes to secure the home victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- 14th Minute: Luke Hendel put the Pilots on top with a strike off a pass from Rey Ortiz. (UP 1, GW 0)
- 21st Minute: Seven minutes later, Gio Magana's well-placed blast off another feed from Ortiz extended the Portland advantage. (UP 2, GW 0)
- 85th Minute: Ben Ortiz converted the final tally on a breakaway after running onto a pass from Yusuf Cueceoglu. (UP 3, GW 0)
NOTEWORTHY
- In the third start of his rookie season, GW goalkeeper Justin Grady recorded a career-high six saves. The Pennsylvania native stopped three shots in the opening 45 minutes and then added three more after halftime to set the new personal mark.
- GW produced several quality chances, including a shot off the post by Max Holdsworth in the 54th minute. The Colonials put four of their six shots on goal on the night.
- Sandro Weber, a graduate student from Germany, earned his first career start for the Buff and Blue in the midfield.
- It was GW's first-ever matchup vs. Portland and the program's first visit to the state of Oregon.
UP NEXT: GW is back on the road Tuesday night at Liberty before making its home debut on the Mount Vernon Campus on Sept. 14 with a 3 p.m. start vs. Brown.
