Colonial men look to open season with team victory for second straight year
WASHINGTON - GW cross country is set to start its four-meet fall campaign with a visit to the Mount St. Mary's Duals on Friday in Emmitsburg, Md. The men's 5K race begins the festivities at 11 a.m., followed by the women's 5K race.
PRESEASON PROGNOSTICATIONS: The women's team enters the season with its highest-ever regional ranking, placing ninth in the preseason Mid-Atlantic region coaches poll. The Colonials posted their highest regional finish in program history last year, finishing 14th. GW's women have now been regionally ranked for at least one week in five straight seasons.
YOUTH IS SERVED: The men's team returns six of the eight contributors from last year's conference race, but will rely heavily upon a nine-person freshman class to lead the way during the cross country season. With a full 22-man roster, a wide variety of harriers will have the opportunity to showcase their skills in the fall campaign.
LAST YEAR AT MOUNT ST. MARY'S: GW's men are aiming to repeat as champions of the event after topping the ladder for the second time in three seasons last year. Andrew Weber gave GW its first individual victory since 2014 in the event with Jackson Cronin and Colin Wills also placing in the top five.
On the women's side, GW had a second place finish as a team with Suzanne Dannheim leading the way with a then-PR time and an individual second place finish.
ABOUT THE DUALS: Friday represents the 14th year that Mount St. Mary's has opened the season with the duals. This year, GW will go up against the host Mountaineers in addition to American, Georgetown, Johns Hopkins, Maryland (women only), Stevenson, UMBC and Washington Adventist.
