Colonials notch first victory of 2019
WASHINGTON – The George Washington women's soccer team picked up its first victory of the 2019 season with a 2-1 win over crosstown foe American on Wednesday evening.
After the game's first goal early in the first half, the Colonials saw a second half surge with two goals on nine shots to propel the squad to a comeback victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• 6th Minute – American was able to get on the board early with a goal from Fisayo Iluyomade. AU 1, GW 0
• 58th Minute – The Colonials rattled off a pair of shots in the first 10 minutes after the break and their persistence paid off. Sofia Pavon drew the Buff and Blue even by taking a pass from Rachel Sorkenn, drawing the keeper out of the box, and shooting into an empty net. GW 1, AU 1
• 75th Minute – GW continued to press on attack, tallying six shots in an 18-minute span, before Maria Pareja tallied what proved to be the game winner. GW 2, AU 1
NOTEWORTHY
• GW's win against American marks its third straight victory against its District foe.
• After registering five shots in the first half and trailing early on, the Colonials turned it up a notch in the second half to finish the day with the 2-1 victory and a 14-6 advantage in shots. Nine of GW's 14 shots came on goal.
• The GW backline held American to just two shots in the second half.
• In just her second game in the Buff and Blue, Rachel Sorkenn led the squad with four shots on the night, three of which came on goal. The River Edge, New Jersey, native also tallied an assist.
• Keeper Tamaki Machi made four saves while American's Morgan Lang made seven.
