Men’s Squash Welcomes Five for 2019-20

WASHINGTON – George Washington men's squash head coach Anderson Good has announced that five student-athletes are slated to join the Colonials for the 2019-20 season.
"This class is one of the deepest recruiting classes we've had in program history and will substantially improve our team for the 2019-20 season," said Good. "Many of these incoming players will immediately slot into crucial places in our starting lineup, and the new competition will only improve our team collectively."
The class features Rohan Bagli (Cincinnati, Ohio), Ian Blatchford (Wilton, Conn.), Moustafa Montaser (Giza, Egypt), Karim Thabet (Giza, Egypt) and David Varela (Bogota, Colombia).
After winning back-to-back Hoehn Cup (B-Division) Championships at the College Squash Association Team Nationals, the squad will look to break into the A-Division for the first time in program history.
Rohan Bagli
Fr.
Cincinnati, Ohio
High School: Attended Indian Hill High School … received the Scholar Athlete Award as a senior … also earned the 4.0 GPA award and was a Honors Diploma recipient … played squash at T Squash Academy.
Coach Good on Bagli: "Rohan is the second Ohio native in the GW squash program, joining women's squash rising junior Zuha Nazir. Rohan is a very strong student and solid player who will help us strengthen our lineup this coming season."
Ian Blatchford
Fr.
Wilton, Conn.
High School: Attended Avon Old Farms … recognized as an All-American in 2016 and 2017 … 2011 U-11 National Champion … 2015 U-15 National Champion … third place at Nationals in 2013, 2014, and 2017 … also played baseball … honor roll his junior and senior year.
Coach Good on Blatchford: "Ian is one of the strongest American men's recruits we've brought to GW in recent years. A former U.S. National Champion, Ian had a very solid career at Avon Old Farms, where he played at the top of their lineup and helped them to several top-five national finishes. Ian was also a top-10 ranked junior this past season."
Moustafa Montaser

High School: Member of the 2018 World Junior Champion Team for Egypt … 2018 World Junior Individual Championship quarterfinalist … 2018 British Junior Open quarterfinalist.
Coach Good on Montaser: "Moustafa is one of the strongest players we have brought to GW. Moustafa was a member of the Egyptian Junior National Team that won the 2018 World Junior Championship in India. Additionally, Moustafa had top-eight finishes in the 2018 British Junior Open and World Junior Individual Championship. He is very excited to join the GW community, as are we to have him. "
Karim Thabet

Giza, Egypt
High School: Went to New Cairo British International School … recognized on the honor roll all four years … 10th place US Junior Open U-19 in 2017 ... highest ranking of fourth nationally … ranked between fourth and eight through 2015-18 … Egyptian National Quarter Finalist 2017 … multiple finalist and semifinalist of tier-one national tournaments.
Coach Good on Thabet: "Karim is a very strong player with extensive international and domestic squash experience. Karim has had strong finishes in the Egyptian Junior Nationals and comes to us as one of Egypt's top junior players. He is a strong student, great kid and will be a key player for us this year."
David Varela

Bogota, Colombia
High School: Started playing squash in 2012 … was BU national champion in Colombia in 2014 and 2015 … became part of the Colombian National Team in 2017 … 2018 Top-40 at the US Junior Squash Open Championships in Boston … finished in the Top-20 at the 2018 Canadian Junior Squash Open … ranked 16th in Colombia … played in the 2018 Central American and Caribbean Games … also placed 5th at the 2018 South American Junior Squash Championships.
Coach Good on Varela: "David continues the long line of Bogota, Colombia, natives we have had join us in the GW squash program. He has strong international experience and has represented Colombia in the South and Central American Junior Squash Championships."
