Good to take reigns after four seasons as assistant coach
WASHINGTON – Anderson Good has been named Head Coach of the George Washington squash program, Director of Athletics and Recreation Tanya Vogel announced Wednesday.
"In his four seasons at GW, Coach Good has helped cultivate a culture of discipline and excellence in the squash programs as prominent competitors in the College Squash Association and most recently as back-to-back Hoehn Cup Championships for the men," said Vogel. "His passion for GW, commitment to higher education and determination to compete at the highest level made Anderson our ideal candidate. Coach Good is committed to continuing to build relationships with all of our student-athletes, as he moves into the chair as head coach. Good will build upon the outstanding foundation established by Wendy Lawrence as he looks to lead both programs to continued excellence on the court."
"I'm extremely excited to be able to continue my work with the GW Squash program as Head Coach of the men's and women's teams," said Good. "I want to thank Tanya Vogel and Andre Julien for this opportunity and the incredible support and guidance they have given me thus far. I am very fortunate to have had so much time learning from my former boss and predecessor, Wendy Lawrence. During my four years as her assistant, I grew both personally and professionally and now feel more than ready for this opportunity. I am eager to build on the incredibly strong foundation Wendy laid for this program and look forward to taking GW squash to new heights. GW is an incredible school and truly places its student-athletes in positions to succeed. I am thrilled to be able to contribute to our student-athletes' success and growth, on and off the court, for years to come."
In four seasons with the Colonials, Good has helped lead the GW squash program on an upward trajectory. Both the men's and women's programs have finished in the top-15 of the CSA end-of-season rankings since 2015, with nine student-athletes earning CSA All-American honors.
Good elevated the men's program to new heights in 2017-18, helping to lead the Colonials to their first-ever Hoehn Cup (B-Division) Championship at CSA Team Nationals and earning its highest national ranking in program history of No. 9. GW was able to hold onto its Hoehn Cup title in 2018-19 after entering the championship 2-5 against the B-Division field. The Colonials proved their prowess by upsetting a pair of those teams to earn a spot in the title match against Drexel, and went on to clinch the cup with a 6-3 victory over the Dragons.
Under Good's direction, the women have also enjoyed success, finishing as No. 14 in the nation in 2017-18 after posting notable wins against Virginia and Colby, and as No. 15 in 2018-19. Zoe Foo Yuk Han won an individual championship with Good's guidance, was named a two-time CSA All-American, and earned an individual end-of-season ranking of No. 12.
On the men's side, Moudy Abdel-Maksoud (2017-18, 2018-19) and Mohammad Alterki (2018-19) were recognized as CSA All-Americans and finished 2018-19 with the highest individual end-of-season rankings in GW squash history of No. 11 and No. 12, respectively.
"I am so excited that Anderson has been selected as the new Head Squash Coach," said former head coach Wendy Lawrence. "I have worked closely with him over the past four years and I know he is tremendously dedicated to the teams and the program. He understands what is needed to move the program forward, from recruiting to training to team cohesiveness, and he is determined and capable of moving both teams into the elite eight and higher. Anderson has earned this post and I know the program is in great hands."
In addition to his work at GW, Good played an integral role in the foundation of the Mid-Atlantic Squash Conference (MASC), the first ever collegiate squash specific athletic conference in the United States. As the league commissioner, Good conduced all facets of MASC's operations including team recruitment, conference championship planning, and fundraising. After its inaugural season in 2018-19, seven men's teams and five women's teams will compete for the conference crown in 2019-20.
Good graduated with a degree in communication and government from St. Lawrence University, where he had a successful collegiate run with 44 victories across his four-year career. He served as team captain as a senior in 2014-15, helping the Saints to a No. 2 national ranking, the highest in program history.
As a senior, Good advanced to the Round of 16 in the Malloy Cup (B-Division) of the College Squash Association (CSA) Individual National Championships and concluded the season ranked No. 41 overall in the CSA men's individual rankings.
