GW alum to stay in Foggy Bottom after finishing career with Colonials
WASHINGTON - GW women's basketball coach Jennifer Rizzotti announced Wednesday that Anna Savino has been added to the team's coaching staff for the 2019-20 season, serving as a graduate assistant.
"What more can I say about Anna Savino?" Rizzotti said. "We've been fortunate to have her as part of our program for the past four seasons and couldn't be more excited to have her join the staff as our graduate assistant.
"Not only was she one of our hardest workers on the court, but her ability to pick things up quickly this year proved she has a future on the basketball sidelines. In addition, her background as a three-year manager gives her a great idea of what to expect in her new role."
Savino walked on to the Colonials roster in October 2018 after serving as a team manager for three years. What started as a walk-on position turned into an incredible story during the 2018-19 campaign, as Savino appeared in the season opener at James Madison before joining the starting lineup on Nov. 18 at Iona.
From there, Savino started the final 27 games of her collegiate career and was awarded a scholarship for the spring semester prior to the team's contest at Rhode Island on Jan. 9. In 29 games, she averaged 2.4 points and 2.6 rebounds per game while playing over 25 minutes per contest.
As a member of the coaching staff, Savino will provide support for all aspects of the program, including game and practice operations, team travel, recruiting and player development.
"I am beyond excited to be working for Coach Rizzotti and this amazing staff at GW," Savino said. "I know that this position will give me the experience that I need to work in the sports industry, supplemented by the Masters in Sport Management degree that I will be receiving from the GW School of Business."
All three GW seniors from the 2018-19 season - Mei-Lyn Bautista, Kelsi Mahoney and Savino - will graduate this week and remain involved with women's college basketball. Bautista has been named a graduate assistant at St. John's University in New York and Mahoney earned an Postgraduate Internship with the NCAA, where she will serve as an operations assistant for the 2020 Women's Final Four.
