No. 9 Men’s Squash Holds On To Hoehn Cup

Colonials win back-to-back B-Division Title
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – After winning its first-ever Hoehn Cup (B-Division) Championship last season, the George Washington men's squash team proved its commitment and determination at the College Squash Association (CSA) Team Nationals on Sunday afternoon, holding onto its Hoehn Cup title for the second-straight season with an impressive 6-3 victory over Drexel.
With the title, GW (13-12) finishes the 2018-19 season ranked No. 9 in the nation, tying the highest ranking in program history.
The Colonials established a dominant 4-1 lead to start the day, with Salim Khan, Julian Jervis, Ben Sim, and Luke Stauffer all earning wins at their respective spots on the ladder. Drexel attempted a comeback with a win at No. 6, but GW stopped the Dragons in their tracks when Jamie Oakley clinched the cup with his 11-9, 11-4, 11-6 victory at No. 7.
With their title cemented, Mohammad Alterki notched one more win for the Buff and Blue to end the day with the 6-3 victory over Drexel.
Going into CSA Team Nationals, GW was 2-5 against the B-Division field with wins over Navy and Drexel and losses to Western Ontario, Virginia, St. Lawrence, and Franklin & Marshall. The Colonials went on to prove their prowess by defeating two of those teams in championship play, edging Western Ontario (5-4) in the quarterfinals and St. Lawrence (7-2) in the semifinal round. With their win over Drexel (8-1) last weekend for Senior Day, the Colonials went into the B-Division finals with confidence, helping them secure the Hoehn Cup for the second-straight season.
