Colonials top Johns Hopkins, come back for victory over Navy
SPRINGFIELD, Va. -Â GW men's water polo earned a pair of gritty victories this weekend at the St. James, defeating Johns Hopkins, 20-12, on Friday before exacting revenge against Navy with a 17-14 OT victory Saturday.Â
GW 20, Johns Hopkins 12:Â The Colonials roared to an eight-goal triumph on Friday night, crossing the 20-goal threshold for the third time this season.Â
GW came out of the gate firing, rattling off eight unanswered goals in the first quarter after allowing the initial tally. The Buff & Blue kept the pedal to the metal with six more goals in the second quarter, and led 14-5 at intermission before cruising to the victory.
Jordan Blosser led the GW attack with four goals, one of five Colonials that scored multiple tallies. Gabriele Simonti and Nick Schroeder notched hat tricks while Atakan Destici and Bender Russo provided a pair of markers in a victory that snapped GW's brief two-game skid.
GW 17, Navy 14 (OT):Â A week after suffering a tough defeat to the Midshipmen in Annapolis, GW defended its home pool with a comeback overtime victory.
Navy started quick with a 5-2 edge after the opening frame that extended to 9-5 at intermission. However, GW swung momentum back with three goals in the final 1:17 of the third quarter to even the match at 11 entering the fourth.
Again, the Colonials needed to rally after falling behind 13-11, getting a pair of goals from Simonti 45 seconds apart to force overtime. The Buff & Blue controlled the extra session, receiving tallies from Blosser, Destici, Andrew Mavis and Nick Schroeder in quick order to cement the come-from-behind victory.
Destici and Simonti led GW with four goals each while Schroder accounted for a hat trick.
Up Next:Â The Colonials wrap up their home schedule with a doubleheader on Saturday, welcoming Fordham (11 a.m.) and Wagner (5 p.m.) to the Smith Center.
