Colonials close our fall slate on a high note
WASHINGTON – The George Washington men's squash team closed out its fall slate on a high note on Sunday afternoon, upsetting No. 7 Columbia, 5-4.
After falling to No. 3 Penn, 9-0, on Saturday afternoon, the Colonials bounced back on Sunday in New York. In their closest match up the season, all but two matches went to four or five games, with the Buff and Blue edging out its CSA foe to secure the victory.
Mohammad Alterki won at the top spot on the ladder, beating out Columbia's Callan Hall 11-8, 12-10, 2-11, 11-9. Inaki de Larrauri added to the Colonials' momentum with a victory at No. 5 before David Varela (No. 7) and Luke Stauffer (No. 9) were able to tie the match at four apiece.
With the upset within reach, it was up to Jamie Okaley at the third spot on the ladder. The Tauranga, New Zealand, native won the first two games 11-8, 11-6, before dropping the third, 5-11. Columbia's Chaitanya Shah attempted to claw back further, but Oakley pushed on and cemented GW's victory with an 11-3 win in the fourth.
UP NEXT: The Colonials will be idle from competition over the holidays and will return to competition at the beginning of January.
