Women’s Soccer Shuts Out Saint Joseph’s, 3-0, in A-10 Quarterfinals

Colonials to travel to Saint Louis for semifinals on Friday
WASHINGTON – The George Washington women's soccer team opened up Atlantic 10 Championship action in dominant fashion on Saturday afternoon at the GW Soccer Field, shutting out Saint Joseph's in the quarterfinals, 3-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• 5th Minute: GW was the first to strike with an early goal from Maria Pareja. Sammy Neyman passed the ball from the corner to Hannah Zaluski, who shot from way out into the box. Pareja was positioned just in front of the goal and was able to tip it in to give GW the early lead. GW 1, SJU 0
• 51st Minute: Pavon padded the Colonials' lead with a strike from long range. Zaluski found Pavon in the pocket, giving her the opportunity to shoot a laser into the upper right hand corner of the net. GW 2, SJU 0
• 73rd Minute: The Colonials kept it going in the second half and added to their lead with a goal from Rachel Sorkenn. Following a SJU corner kick, Tori Minda secured the ball and went on a break away down the field, and weaved around the Hawks' defender to find Sorkenn. Sorkenn struck from deep to bring GW's advantage to three. GW 3, SJU 0
NOTEWORTHY
• The Colonials will make their first appearance in an A-10 semifinal match since 2016, after the squad defeated Duquesne in the quarterfinals, 2-1, in overtime.
• GW outshot Saint Joseph's, 13-10, recording 10 of its shots in the game's second half. Pavon paced the squad with three shots while Pareja, Anyssa Ibrahim, and Sorkenn tallied two apiece.
• The Hawks held a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.
• Keeper Tamaki Machi made four saves to turn in her fifth clean sheet of the season. Four of those shutouts have come in conference action.
• All three of GW's leading scorers found the back of the net in today's match. Sorkenn paces the squad with 23 points (9g, 5a), while Pavon (5g, 5a) and Pareja (5g, 5a) are in a tie for second on the team with 15 points apiece.
• Defender Hannah Zaluski finished the day with a season-high two assists.
UP NEXT: The Colonials will face either Massachusetts or Fordham in the semifinal round of the Atlantic 10 Championship next Friday, November 8 in Saint Louis's Hermann Stadium. Kickoff is set for 4:00 p.m. CT.
