
Women’s Soccer to Host Delaware and Stetson

Colonials look to continue hot start to 2018
KICKING OFF: The George Washington women's soccer team will kick off a three-match homestand starting on Thursday against Delaware at 5 p.m., before hosting Stetson on Sunday for a 1 p.m. bout at the GW Soccer Field on the Mount Vernon Campus. The Colonials will wrap up their stint at home against local foe and defending Big East regular season and tournament champion Georgetown on Thursday, August 30 at 5 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT: In their first road test of the 2018 season, the soccer squad was able to notch their second victory by dropping Liberty, 2-1, in overtime on Sunday afternoon. GW finished the day with an 11-9 advantage in shots (6-5 SOG) and 2-1 edge in cornerkicks.
A-10 ACCOLADES: Alexis Williams was named the first Atlantic 10 Player of the Week for the 2018 season. Williams had a standout start to her sophomore season, cementing GW's victory in its season opener over the University of the Pacific with the long goal of the game. The criminal justice major continued her momentum on Sunday at Liberty, giving GW a 1-0 lead at the half. After the Flames tied the game at 1-1 to force overtime, Williams found Sofia Pavon for the game-winner just three minutes into the extra period. The midfielder paces the team with six shots on the weekend, all of which have come on goal.
TAPPED OUT BY TAPEN: In her first appearance on the pitch since 2016, keeper Anna Tapen proved to be a force between the posts, making a career-high six saves against the University of the Pacific. The shutout also marked the senior's first career clean sheet.
FIRST THINGS FIRST: Six Colonials made their debut in the Buff and Blue over the weekend. First-years Hannah Zaluski and Maria Pareja made their first career starts against the University of the Pacific, with Zaluski sharing the team lead with four shots on net while Pareja had two of her own. Madi Coyne, Anya Heijst, Alexandra Filipkowski, and Beth Ellinport also logged their first minutes during GW's undefeated opening weekend.
ABOUT DELAWARE: The Blue Hens travel to Washington, D.C. after dropping their season opener, 3-0, to Rutgers on Friday and battling Seton Hall to a scoreless draw on Sunday. GW holds a 3-1-0 advantage in the series history over Delaware, last defeating the Blue Hens 3-0 in 2016.
ABOUT STETSON: The Hatters opened 2018 with a perfect 2-0 record, downing FIU 2-0 on Friday before edging Towson, 2-1, on Sunday. Stetson will take on Navy on Friday before going head-to-head with the Colonials for the first time in program history on Sunday.
