Sofia Pavon lifts the Colonials to victory with game-winner
LYNCHBURG, Va. – In their first road test of the 2018 season, the George Washington women's soccer squad was able to notch their second victory by dropping Liberty, 2-1, in overtime on Sunday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• 22nd Minute: After two consecutive shots from the Colonials, Alexis Williams was able to build off the team's momentum and lift GW to a 1-0 lead after taking a cross from Megan McCormick and shooting the ball the into the back of the net. (GW 1, LU 0)
• 65th Minute: Despite holding the Flames scoreless through the first half and into the game's second stanza, Liberty was able to get the ball passed the Buff and Blue defense to even the score at one with 25 minutes to play. (GW 1, LU 1)
• 93rd Minute: With the score deadlocked at one at the conclusion of regulation, the Colonials headed to overtime. Just three minutes into the extra period, Sofia Pavon took a pass from Williams and shot the ball out of the reach of the Liberty keeper from just outside the box to cement the GW win. (GW 2, LU 1)
NOTEWORTHY
• Williams continued her momentum from Thursday and gave GW its first goal of the day and an assist on the game-winner. The sophomore also paced the team with six shots on the weekend.
• Pavon netted her first goal of the season and the eighth game-winner of her career in today's match. The senior lead the team with four shots and two shots on goal in 58 minutes of play.
• McCormick's assist on Williams' goal marks her second of the season. The captain's assists in back-to-back games are the first of her career.
• Keeper Anna Tapen made four saves between the post against the Flames.
• The Colonials finished the day with an 11-9 advantage in shots (6-5 SOG) and 2-1 edge in cornerkicks.
