Women’s Soccer Topples Tigers in Season Opener, 1-0

GW outshoots Pacific 20-7
WASHINGTON – In a new season under first-year head coach Michelle Demko, the George Washington women's soccer team picked up its first victory with a 1-0 win over Pacific on Thursday at the GW Soccer Field on the Mount Vernon Campus. The Colonials proved that they are a threat on both sides of the ball, totaling 20 shots on net while holding the opposing Tigers to just seven on the day.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• 56th Minute: Alexis Williams put the Colonials on the board just 11 minutes into the second half with the first goal of the 2018 season. In a scramble in front of the net, Williams was able to find the ball and place it into the bottom right hand corner to give GW the 1-0 advantage.
NOTEWORTHY
• First-years Hannah Zaluski and Maria Pareja made their first career starts in today's season opener. Zaluski shared the team lead with four shots on net while Pareja had two of her own.
• Madi Coyne, Anya Heijst, Alexandra Filipkowski, and Beth Ellinport also made their debut in the Buff and Blue against the Tigers.
• In her first appearance between the posts since 2016, senior keeper Anna Tapen made a career-high six saves. The shutout also marks the senior's first career clean sheet.
• The Colonials dominated on the offensive end, leading the Tigers 20-7 in shots while also holding a 4-0 edge in corner kicks.
• GW had 11 close chances in the second half and held Pacific to just three shots in the game's closing stanza.
