Colonials try for regular season sweep of Bison
The 17th-ranked Colonials (13-4, 5-1 MAWPC) will try for a regular season sweep of the Bison (10-2, 4-1) on the heels of their 20-9 win at Smith Center Pool last weekend. The teams currently sit first and second, respectively, in the Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference standings.
LAST TIME OUT:Â GW swept three MAWPC games last weekend, including a doubleheader in Foggy Bottom. The Colonials clipped Johns Hopkins, 21-18, on Friday night before downing La Salle and Bucknell on Saturday in a spirited home atmosphere to close the weekend.
GW showcased impressive offense racking up 64 goals in the three victories, including a season-best 23-goal effort against La Salle. Andrew Mavis led the Buff and Blue in scoring in each contest, totaling 18 goals en route to MAWPC Player of the Week honors.
ON THE MARK:Â GW's offensive success has been fueled by more efficient shooting.
Last season, the Colonials hit 40.1 percent of their attempts en route to averaging 12.6 goals per game. Through 17 games, they have converted 48.9 percent of their shots and piled up 15.8 goals per game. They have scored at least 20 goals in seven of their 13 victories, including four of five in conference play.
NATIONALLY KNOWN:Â With last week's win over then-No. 15 Bucknell, GW improved to 3-3 against ranked foes this season. It was also the Colonials' best win as far as national ranking since defeating the then-No. 9 Bison, 10-9, on Oct. 8, 2016.
SCOUTING BUCKNELL:Â The Bison followed up their loss at GW with narrow road wins over Navy (12-8) and Johns Hopkins (18-17) last weekend. They are set to host La Salle and Wagner on Saturday before they welcome the Colonials to conclude the weekend.
Bucknell continues to be led by Rade Joksimovic, a two-time MAWPC Player of the Year who has posted 51 goals and 36 assists in 12 games.
COMING UP:Â Next week, GW takes a break from MAWPC play to host home matchups with Austin College (Oct. 12, 6 p.m.) and Connecticut College (Oct. 14, 7 p.m.).
