Haukur Hilmarsson scored in loss to Minutemen
WASHINGTON – Haukur Hilmarsson's goal off a beautiful free kick wasn't enough for GW men's soccer Wednesday in a 3-1 loss to Massachusetts on the Mount Vernon Campus.
The Colonials finish the season at 5-9-3 and 1-5-2 in Atlantic 10 play after the setback against the Minutemen (7-8-2, 3-5).
HOW IT HAPPENED
- 29th Minute: UMass took the lead on a goal by Yosuke Hanya off a cross from Brandon Merklin. (UMass 1, GW 0)
- 59th Minute: After halftime, the Minutemen added on with DeAndrae Brown's ninth goal of the season. GW goalkeeper Thor Arne Höfs blocked Clement Benhaddouche's free kick, but Davis Smith managed to poke the rebound to Brown for the goal. (UMass 2, GW 0)
- 60th Minute: Ninety seconds later, Davis added another score with a header off a cross from Benhaddouche. (UMass 3, GW 0)
- 66th Minute: Peirce Williams drew a free kick just outside the 18-yard box, and Hilmarsson took full advantage. The graduate student from Iceland curled his shot into the upper left hand corner of the net for his third goal of the season. (UMass 3, GW 1)

NOTEWORTHY
- Höfs recorded six saves saves against UMass to bring his total to 74 for the season and 264 for his career, fourth-most in program history. The senior keeper made 57 starts in net during his time in Buff and Blue, tallying a program-record 22 clean sheets and a sterling .788 goals against average.
- Jason Re replaced Höfs in the 69th minute Wednesday and recorded one save in his third appearance of the season.
- Oscar Haynes Brown, who missed Wednesday's game due to injury, finishes his sophomore season with a team-leading 25 points via 11 goals and three assists in 12 appearances. The England native ranks among the top 10 nationally at 0.92 goals per game. He's the first Colonial to record double-digit goals since Yoni Berhanu scored 11 times in the 2011 season.
- Hilmarsson closed his first season in Buff and Blue second on the club with eight points via three goals and two assists. He scored all three of his goals in A-10 play.
- Despite Wednesday's loss, GW finished with a winning record on its home field for the fourth straight season at 4-3-1.
