WASHINGTON - Behind a season-high six goals from Atakan Destici, George Washington men's water polo pulled away for a 19-12 win over Wagner on Saturday afternoon at Charles E. Smith Center Pool.
It was second convincing Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference victory in as many days for the Colonials (9-6, 3-2 MAWPC).
GW trailed, 7-6, early in the second quarter before scoring 10 of the next 11 goals. Destici had three goals and Andrew Mavis and Jordan Blosser each scored twice for the Colonials (9-6, 3-2 MAWPC) in the run that sunk Wagner (7-5, 1-1).
Mavis started the burst with the game-tying goal before Blosser netted two in quick succession to put the Colonials (9-6, 3-2 MAWPC) ahead for good. Brett Else's score with 57 second left in the third quarter extended the lead to 16-8.
Destici paced eight GW scorers and also made an impact defensively with four steals and a field block. Mavis posted four goals, two assists and three steals, while Pierce Deamer chipped in three goals.Great third quarter capped by this Brett Else goal. WEEKEND SPOTLIGHT: Destici flashed All-American form in helping GW secure a 2-0 MAWPC weekend. The sophomore from Turkey was more of a facilitator in Friday's win at Johns Hopkins when he racked up two goals and five assists. He found more room to operate against Wagner en route to his season-best goal total.
Destici also piled up a combined nine steals in the two games. He now has a team-best 65 points through 15 contests via 28 goals and 37 assists.
UP NEXT: GW finishes its home-and-home series with Bucknell in Lewisburg, Pa., next Saturday at 5 p.m. The defending MAWPC champion Bison won the first meeting of the season last weekend at Charles E. Smith Center Pool.
