Men's Water Polo Outlasts MIT

Mavis put the Colonials (10-7) in front for good with his only goal of the game with 1:28 left in the first three-minute extra period before Destici added an insurance score in the second. The defense locked down from there, holding the Engineers scoreless over the six minutes of overtime.
GW went in front, 8-6, with four straight goals in the third quarter and continued to lead for most of the fourth before MIT (6-11) rallied to force overtime. The Engineers tied it on Luka Knezevic's goal with 31 seconds left in regulation. The Colonials had a chance to win in the final seconds but couldn't convert.
Destici led GW with four goals, three assists and a career-high seven steals. Kerim Sismanoglu chipped in two goals and three assists. Andras Levai, Pierce Deamer, Noah McKinnie Braun and Jordan Blosser also scored in the victory.
Austin Pyrch entered the game in net for the Colonials after halftime and boosted the defensive effort with nine saves.
UP NEXT: GW will spend the next three days at the Harvard Invitational. All four opponents the Colonials are scheduled to face are ranked, starting with Friday's matchup against No. 15 Brown.
