No. 12 Women's Squash Topples Virginia, 7-2

WASHINGTON -- The No. 12 George Washington women's squash team took revenge over Virginia in dominating fashion with a 7-2 victory on Tuesday night at the Matthew J. Grossman Squash Courts at Lerner Health & Wellness Center.
GW (5-7) took the top four positions on the ladder and picked up key wins at Nos. 6-8 to clinch the victory.
Senior Breanne Flynn set the tone with an easy 11-1, 11-3, 11-4 sweep at No. 1 over Carey Danforth.
Freshman Engy El Mandouh matched Flynn's sweep at No. 2, defeating Tara Arya in extra points, 11-8, 11-8, 13-11.
Junior Mary Jo Mahfood and freshman Emma Tryon made GW a perfect 4-0 at the top of the ladder. Mahfood fought back in a 6-11, 9-11, 11-5, 11-3, 11-7 battle at No. 3 over Julia Thompson, and Tyron came out on top with a 11-5, 7-11, 11-8, 11-9 victory at No. 4.
Freshman Elle Carroll defeated Madeleine Mayhew at No. 6, 3-1. The New York native took the first two sets with ease, 11-3 and 11-5, before dropping the third set in extra points 12-10. Carroll rebounded in the fourth, 11-3, to secure the Colonials victory.
GW took a pair of five-set matches at Nos. 7 and 8 to round out the victory. Freshman Samira Baird pushed through for an impressive 19-17 win in the first game at No. 7 against Virginia's Isabel Ezratty. Baird dropped the second and third sets, but battled back in the fourth and fifth by scores of 11-6 and 11-2 to earn the 3-2 win.
Junior Ginger Sands earned her fourth win of the season by defeating Lindsay Bralower at No. 8. Sands dropped the first match 11-4, but rallied to even the score in the second. Sands fell in the third 11-9, but rebounded with an 11-9 win in the fourth and an 11-6 win in the fifth to clinch the 3-2 victory.
The Colonials continue their four-match home stint when they host Franklin & Marshall on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
