MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. - The George Washington men's soccer squad completed a perfect week of play on Sunday afternoon with a 2-0 victory at Robert Morris to close a stretch of four consecutive road matches.
GW (4-2-3) received goals from junior Christian Lawal and redshirt senior Oliver De Thier for its second victory of the week by a score of 2-0. The triumph marked GW's fifth clean sheet of the season.
Named Atlantic 10 Co-Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, sophomore goalkeeper Thor Arne Höfs continued his stellar play, grabbing his first save of the day in the second minute, smothering an attempt by Robert Morris.
Sophomore Alastair Berry tallied GW's first shot of the day in the 8th minute, but his attempt went wide.
Höfs made an excellent save in the 17th minute, getting a foot on a hot shot toward the net to keep Robert Morris scoreless.
The Buff and Blue went ahead, 1-0, in the 36th minute when Lawal received a long pass from De Thier into the box. Lawal then threaded the ball through the legs of Robert Morris' charging keeper with one touch for his team-leading third goal of the season. Lawal has now scored in three consecutive matches.
GW nearly doubled its lead in the 41st minute when senior Garrett Heine put a shot on goal from a set piece from distance. Robert Morris' keeper made the stop before the defense cleared the ball to end the threat.
Robert Morris got off three quick attempts in the final 1:20 to close the half, but a defensive block and two wide shots preserved GW's 1-0 lead at the end of the stanza.
GW had a chance to increase its lead in the 60th minute when Lawal sent in a shot form the top of the box, but Robert Morris grabbed the save.
The Buff and Blue took a 2-0 lead in the 86th minute when Heine sent a cross deep into the box from the right wing, where De Thier landed a diving header into the back of the net for his first goal of the season. De Thier finished the match with a game-high three points.
GW held Robert Morris to just one shot in the second half and outshot RMU 14-9 on the day. Höfs tallied three saves on Sunday.
GW looks to continue its hot play on Wednesday, when the Colonials host St. Francis Brooklyn in the squad's non-conference finale at the GW Soccer Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
